Walkden Wire - 8th May 2026
This is our pupil lead Walkden Wire page, dedicated to connecting the community with our academy.
Here you will find our Co-op Values in action!
This week our Year 7, Wakden Wire Team have been out and about in the academy to bring you a little snapshot of whats been happening behind classroom doors, find out more below.
Design Technology - Year 7: Our Year 7 designers have been making remarkable strides in the textiles studio, demonstrating both creative flair and impressive technical discipline. By working with vibrant, high-contrast palettes, students are mastering intricate sewing techniques to transform individual designs into cohesive, threaded masterpieces. Beyond the aesthetic, this project is deeply rooted in sustainability, as students explore the importance of eco-friendly materials and ethical production. Most importantly, the classroom has become a hub for developing character and resilience; our students are discovering that patience is the ultimate tool in the artisan's kit, resulting in high-quality products they can truly be proud of.
Food Technology - Year 8: Our Year 8s have been busy diving into the world of food branding and we are so impressed with their creativity! The students have turned into mini-experts on snack bars, researching everything from the ingredients inside to the science behind the perfect recipe. But it didn’t stop at the food—they’ve also been exploring the "wow factor" of packaging design. Using their Chromebooks, the class took over Canva to build their very own brand identities from scratch. It’s been fantastic to see them sharpening their digital skills while learning how to make a product stand out on the shelf. From deep-dive research to professional-looking designs, these young entrepreneurs are proving they have a real eye for detail!
Maths Year 7: Our Year 7 mathematicians have been having a brilliant time exploring the world of 2D shapes and angles! They’ve been putting their detective hats on to hunt for lines of symmetry and master the art of measuring and calculating angles with fantastic precision. What has been truly special this week is the collaborative spirit in the classroom; the students have been giving such thoughtful and constructive feedback, helping us shape our lessons to better suit how they learn. It’s wonderful to see them taking such an active, confident role in their own education. Our Year 7s aren't just learning maths—they’re becoming real experts at communicating their ideas and supporting one another!
English Year 8: Our Year 8 English students have been doing some incredibly deep thinking this week as they dive into Malorie Blackman’s classic novel, "Noughts & Crosses." It’s a gripping story, and the students are using it as a springboard to explore the complex world of propaganda. We’ve been looking at how media can be used to influence or even manipulate the way people think, and the class has been brilliant at spotting these links within the book. It’s been inspiring to see them develop their critical thinking skills, questioning the messages they see in the world around them and discussing how stories can reflect real-life issues. They aren’t just reading a book; they’re becoming savvy media critics!
