Walkden Wire - 15th May 2026

This is our pupil lead Walkden Wire page, dedicated to connecting the community with our academy.
Here you will find our Co-op Values in action!
This week our Year 7, Wakden Wire Team have been out and about in the academy to bring you a little snapshot of whats been happening behind classroom doors, find out more below.
Miss Rudman's RS: Our Year 8s have been tackling some of the most important conversations of our time in Religious Studies, focusing on the powerful history and ongoing work of Anti-Racism. The class has been exploring how faith and activism go hand-in-hand, specifically looking at Muslim influences within the movement. We took a deep dive into the legacy of Malcolm X, learning how his journey and global influence shaped civil rights history. To bring things right up to the present day, students also looked at Stormzy’s contributions, discussing how he uses his platform and philanthropy to drive change today. It’s been a privilege to hear our students discuss such significant figures with such maturity and passion for justice!
Miss Sayers RS: Our Year 8s have continued their research into social justice by exploring the role of statues in society and the ethical questions they raise. The classroom was full of energy during our "Turn and Talk" sessions, where students practised the vital skills of listening and debating as they shared their views on how we choose to honour historical figures. The core of our discussion focused on the removal of the Edward Colston statue in Bristol. By looking at this event through an ethical lens, students explored the balance between historical preservation and the religious and moral call for justice and equality. It was a brilliant display of critical thinking, with students considering how our public spaces reflect the values we hold as a community today.
Mr Logies Music: Our Year 8 musicians have been busy discovering their inner maestros as they look into the world of the piano. This week was all about getting hands-on with the instrument, from understanding the keyboard layout to mastering the various controls and settings that bring a piano to life. It hasn’t just been about scales, though! The students have been studying a specific song, breaking it down to get a real grip on notes and rhythms. We’ve been particularly impressed by their independence. After the initial group study, students have been taking the lead on their own learning, practising at their own pace to perfect their timing and flow. The music suite has been filled with the sound of progress, and it’s wonderful to see their confidence grow with every chord!
