  • Remembrance Service 2021

    Published 15/11/21

Last week, we commemorated Remembrance Day. This is an especially poignant day for the Combined Cadet Force students here at Walkden who took a lead in the service.

Our Remembrance Service took place at the front of the Academy. Year 7 attended in person and the rest of the year groups had a live stream to their lessons. All staff and students stopped to honour the service men and women who have fought to give us the rights and freedoms that we enjoy today. We also remembered the serving members of the Armed Forces who continue to keep us safe and defend those privileges every day.

The Combined Cadet Force started the service by performing a drill, showing the skills and discipline promoted by the Forces. Their marching, saluting and turns were well polished and practiced.

  • Black History Month

    Published 04/10/21

In October, we celebrate Black History Month. Black History Month was started in 1926. It began as a way of remembering important Black people and events that shaped history. It is celebrated in America, Canada, the UK, Ireland, and the Netherlands. This year’s theme is ‘Proud to be’.

At Walkden, we are celebrating Black History month in several ways.

    Walkden’s Website

This webpage celebrates all the excellent teaching about Black History that goes on at Walkden. You will also find further reading, films to watch, and things to do to help increase your knowledge of Black History.

    Black History Month Group

We are starting our ‘Black History Month’ group this October. This group will meet twice to:

    • discuss how we can improve Black History celebrations and education at Walkden all year round.

    • choose new BAME authored books for the library.

    • design and create Walkden exclusive ‘Proud to be…’ badges.

Show Racism the Red Card – Wear it Red – Thursday 21st October 2021

‘Show Racism The Red Card’ is a charity, set up by Shaka Hislop, ex-Newcastle FC player, in 1996. ‘Show Racism The Red Card’ wants to educate people. It aims to wipe out racism in sport and wider society.

Every year, in Black History Month, ‘Show Racism The Red Card’ asks people to wear red to raise awareness of their message. The official day for wearing red is the 22nd of October, but we are not in the Academy that day. So, instead, we are asking staff and students to wear a red accessory, in addition to their uniform, on Thursday 21st October 2021. Students can wear red accessories, but they must have perfect uniforms other than that.

A link on parent pay has been added if parents/carers wish to donate to ‘Show Racism The Red Card’.

  • Co-op Academy Walkden Christmas Card Competition

    Published 21/09/21

At the start of September, we launched a very special art competition for our Year 7-9 students. This competition could see your child’s artwork sent to 100s of people in the UK; it’s our annual Christmas card competition!

Students in Year 7-9 have been set the challenge via Google Classrooms as part of their art homework this half term. Students have been asked to design a Christmas card that will represent our Walkden community. The winning design will be sent out to community members, dignitaries, and Co-op Trust leaders.

As well as having their card printed and sent to some very important people in the Walkden community, our winner will also receive a voucher and a specially printed framed copy of their card to keep for posterity.

Students have until the end of the first half term to create or make their design in whatever art form they choose. For example, last year, we had designs that were digitally created and designs that were hand-drawn. This year, we are asking our students to think even more widely, maybe incorporating textiles, collage, or even decorated cakes or biscuits to their designs!

All students have been issued with the same criteria, which can be found below, and all designs must be submitted via Google Classroom by 3 pm on 22nd October 2021.

Good luck to all our students! Any questions, please email walkden.info@coopacademies.co.uk.

    Design Criteria

    1. The design must be done on an A4 page.

    2. It can be landscape or portrait.

    3. It must have our academy name on it in full – Co-op Academy Walkden

    4. Please do not use the Co-op Academy logo on the card.

    The design can be:

    • a photo
    • hand-drawn
    • crafted e.g. mosaic, collage, knit, sewn, appliqued etc.
    • created digitally.

All design work must be ORIGINAL and designed by the student only. We cannot accept images that have been downloaded from the internet, or photographs that are not the student’s original creations.

We would like the card to:

    • Reflect our local community and what is special about Walkden
    • Reflect the Co-op Values and the Ways of Being
    • Be bright, colourful and seasonal.

    How to submit

Submit via Google Classroom to your teacher.

    Deadline

    Friday 22nd October 2021 – 3 pm.

    Prizes

The best design will be chosen by Mr Hacker.

This design will be made into the Christmas card that will be sent out from us as an Academy. This card goes to local community members, Governors, Co-op Academies leaders, community leaders, Local Councillors, and more!

We will also make your card into an A4 poster and have this framed. You will be presented with this and a voucher for £10 by Mr Hacker.
