Special Education Needs
We're proud to be an inclusive school
Special Educational Needs is a golden thread that runs through everything we do. Our universal offer centres around high quality teaching and learning and benefits all students. Some of our more complex students access a more bespoke offer, most of which is based in the Hive. To find out more about our SEND provision at Walkden you may like to read our:
The Hive
The Hive is an Enhanced Resource Provision for students with Cognition and Learning Difficulties. We have 7 places each year and decisions of who is awarded a place in the Hive is in consultation with the Local Authority. In order to be considered for a place in the Hive, students must have an Education, Health and Care Plan with a primary need of Cognition and Learning.
Students have the opportunity to access small teaching groups for Maths, English and Humanities at KS3 and Functional Skills Entry Level Maths, English, Science and History at KS4 as well as Btec Pre-Vocational Studies. For all the other subjects, students will join mainstream classes with the support from teaching assistants.
At Co-op Academy Walkden our aim is to offer students a broad and balanced curriculum and this also applies to students with learning difficulties. We believe that students with learning difficulties should have the same opportunities and experiences as their peers. We ensure appropriate provision is in place to allow students to achieve the best possible outcomes.
SEND team
Our Special Educational Needs Co-ordinator's (SENCO) are Mrs S King and Deputy Mrs G Maguire
We have a dedicated team of Teaching Assistants who work with our students. Many of them have specialisms, enabling us to provide the best support package for all our students in house.
